Embracing Imperfection Through Olivia Dolphin’s ‘Not Perfect’

On a warm spring day, sitting in the garden under the blossoming apple tree and enjoying the scent of flowers, for some reason, I found myself reminiscing about my childhood. When I was eight years old, I had a lot of complexes – I was worried about my small forehead, and the mole above my lip annoyed me to no end, but most of all, I was troubled by how much I blushed when I was embarrassed. And then there was my grandfather, who once said to me: “Every person in this life has their own destiny. Search for your heart, and you will find your path.” Those words, spoken many years ago, echoed in my heart, awakening warm memories of childhood.

At that moment, the new song ‘Not Perfect’ by Olivia Dolphin was playing in my headphones, and I was struck by how accurately it reflected my thoughts. The single challenges traditional expectations of perfection and celebrates the beauty of imperfection. Its strong lyrics and dynamic instrumentation underscore themes of self-discovery, liberation, and the courage to accept oneself as they are. Dolphin’s powerful and poignant vocals don’t soften with promises of change or growth, but boldly acknowledge her flaws as an integral part of her identity. Olivia Dolphin amazed me with her talent as a singer and songwriter, skillfully weaving themes of community, self-love, and resilience into her music. Her work, filled with poetic lyrics, has an incredible ability to turn shared experiences into deeply personal and memorable moments. Easily blending elements of indie pop and alternative rock, Olivia creates a compelling sound that leaves me enchanted and eager to hear more. In the single “Not Perfect,” she strives to create an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels their uniqueness.

Written and performed by Dolphin herself, accompanied by a talented ensemble including Johnny McMahon on bass guitar, Jeff Kidd on harmonica, Luke Leheny on guitar, and Sam Jaksa on drums, the single is a lively and candid cocktail of indie rock and pop music. Produced and mixed by Emma Newton, with mastering by Brad Krieger, “Not Perfect” was recorded at the prestigious Big Nice Studios in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Dolphin and her colleagues worked tirelessly on releasing this track. The single is part of a larger project that will culminate in the release of Dolphin’s highly anticipated album in the fall of this year. In the coming months, two more singles will be released, each of which will provide an opportunity to learn more about Dolphin’s creative work.
