Harmonies Like Hurricanes: The Surprising Power of Jackie Marks and Jon Loya’s ‘Change’

Imagine Bonnie and Clyde, but instead of bank robberies and evading the police, they’re playing guitar, singing, and mastering the art of songwriting. Well, Jackie Marks and Jon Loya from New England are just those musical outlaws, only with guitars instead of revolvers. At the end of last year, they set their course on original tracks, leaving tribute bands behind and following their true calling, diving headfirst into creating new material, and their progress is impressive. Their debut single was released in April of this year, and now they’re presenting their new single, “Change.”

From the first chords, when the guitar strings set a confident rhythm, it seems like know what to expect, but then comes the “heavy artillery” Jackie’s vocals. It rings and cuts through the air with a certain pleasant roughness. There’s character in the voice. It has a kind of raspiness – in the best sense, as if it’s about to crack, but instead keeps moving forward. Listening to the track, I was impressed by the vocal harmonies, they’re sometimes light, and suddenly become incredibly powerful, like an unexpected gust of wind. All this happens against a backdrop of acoustic and electric guitars, skillfully blending into one musical organism. Believe me, it’s truly something!

Forget about standards: here, there’s rhythm, airy bass, and juicy drums that pump life and rhythm into the track. This single is the result of their synergy and personal contribution, and it literally breathes openly, thanks to the masterful arrangement and stunning balance of dynamics. And this is perhaps its main strength.

Listening to “Change,” I imagined being in the middle of a movie, where sounds and emotions dance to their own rhythm. And like in the best movies, this track leaves a long aftertaste a feeling that something has changed and that the music world will now be a bit brighter.
