New Zealand is a land of contrasts. Icy peaks rise against bright blue skies, while volcanoes spew lava. Beyond nature’s dramatic beauty, New Zealand is also a hub for exciting new music projects. The grim-hop scene here is producing some of its finest talent.
SLIMIVICH is a project by heavy music veterans Slim Jenkins and Mo Galloway, born from their passion for slow electronic rhythms, socially conscious rap, and hardcore punk. Now, SLIMIVICH and New Zealand producer Aaron Hogg from Throng have teamed up to release their first collaborative single, “Wound Tight.” In this track, the group explores what “heavy” music truly means. Instead of the usual explosive power that fans might expect, “Wound Tight” builds on a simmering, electrifying tension.
The concept behind the single captures the feeling of seeking inner peace and tranquility in a world where minds are worn down by the constant struggle and stress typical of late capitalist life. Sharp lyrical lines in “Wound Tight” are set against thunderous drums, piercing synths, and heavy bass, expressing both pain and doubt.
The music video, created by director Luis Castanon and cinematographer Bevan Triebels, presents a meaningful dialogue between digital art and reality. With Aaron Hogg’s expertise in digital graphics, the team contrasts the untamed beauty of nature with a stark, minimalist studio aesthetic.
In the remaining months of 2024, the group will refine their debut album, continue collaborations with grim-hop partner THRONG, and retreat to Golden Bay to channel their creative energy. Sit back, turn on “Wound Tight,” and let this song become the soundtrack that drowns out the noise in your head and helps you unwind.
