Truth rarely reveals itself at once – more often it hides behind the dense fabric of our expectations and dreams. When the curtain does fall, we are faced with a reality that breaks apart our familiar stories. It is about this pivotal moment that Lora Kelley sings in her new single “Man Behind the Curtain”, released on August 15. The second track from her forthcoming album carries the recognizable imprint of the singer: gentle storytelling, openness, and tenderness rooted in the American musical tradition.

Living with her family on a quiet farm in Virginia, Lora weaves together music, art, and the practice of story work. For her, song becomes a way to turn personal pain into a source of light, reminding us that behind façades there is often vulnerability, and that the breaking of myths can open the way to what is real. The desire to write the song arose on a winter night, when words and melody came in an unexpected flow. Inspired by the image of Dorothy and the unmasked wizard from “The Wizard of Oz,” Lora sets this story alongside our own experience: what do we feel when our faith in those close to us collapses, and instead of support, only a shadow remains?

“Man Behind the Curtain” sounds like a quiet meditation on the fragility of trust and the courage to move forward. The music intertwines soft acoustic shades – guitar, piano, and the breath of live instruments create a space where one can truly hear oneself. As a story work coach, Kelley works with people who are learning anew what trust means after trauma. In her music, she does not offer ready-made answers, but gives presence and support — a hand that helps to find the way home.

The recording features Matt Stanfield (piano), Josh Hunt (drums), Jacob Lowery (bass), Nate Duggar (guitar), and Mike Payne (guitar), with Evan Redwine as engineer.
