“Things Happen At Night” by Planks: Anatomy of the Nocturnal Mind

In the darkness of the city, stories often hide-stories that later give birth to music. That was the case with the song “Things Happen At Night.” It was written by Planks, also known as 32-year-old Mikkel Smidt Diget. This is one of those situations where music is born not in spite of hardship, but because of it. Behind Mikkel lies a stormy youth in Odense, full of endless nights, parties, alcohol, and other “escapes” that only masked an inner emptiness.

The new single “Things Happen At Night” is a chronicle of that very chaotic period. Mikkel admits openly: back then, he turned to self-destruction. But a turning point came later, when he was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). That diagnosis gave his past a completely new meaning. The chaos in his life had been a reaction to internal “overload.” Now, with understanding, comes strategy. As the artist himself says: “I’ve learned that the dark periods are only a phase. I try to be more rational and solution-oriented.” It is this inner realization that shaped the song’s sound: “Things Happen At Night” is built on contrast-from quiet folk introspection to a powerful rock explosion. The track begins with an acoustic rhythm that sets the tone for personal reflection, gradually gains momentum with drums, absorbs an urban shade with the synthesizer, and reaches its climax with energetic guitars. At the center stands Planks’ vocal-direct, sharp, and assured. In it, one hears honesty and determination, born out of acknowledgment and acceptance of ADHD.

The single “Things Happen At Night” is only a teaser. On November 7, his first EP, titled “Pilot,” will be released. The name is symbolic: after years of chaos and trial performances, Planks – now a grounded husband and father of two daughters-sets course for a full-scale music career. In 2025, he decided to devote himself fully to songwriting. Planks is a story of learning how to manage one’s own chaos. A story that began in a stormy night, but now promises to shine on the brightest stages.
