Tape from the Past: Family Worship Center and Their “Malibu by Midnight”

Today, the Portland‑based collective Family Worship Center presents the track “Malibu by Midnight.” More a restored hymn than a conventional cover, “Malibu by Midnight” was “discovered” alongside a newly recovered religious text. According to the band, the song surfaced on a cassette tape together with fragments of scripture-its author and origins unknown-hovering somewhere between West Coast mysticism, faded glamour, and a quiet escape from reality.

Sonically, the track echoes the golden era of the 1970s and the aesthetic of forgotten West Coast AM Gold releases. Family Worship Center approach the song like a relic unearthed from another time, preserving its warm, restrained sound. The result is a meditative piece built on analog tones, late‑night vocal harmonies, and the calm atmosphere of a quiet coastal night.
