“Loveliness Made Damned” is a mesmerizing visual EP that draws you into a mysterious garden. Here, in Marta Palombo’s poignant indie-folk-pop style, an unforgettable narrative unfolds about a love that is no more. “Loveliness Made Damned” showcases the mastery of cinematic indie-pop, embodying Palombo’s music essence: emotional, orchestral, and grandiose. Palombo emphasizes strings, intricate plotlines, and emotional depth, transcending commercial standards to create a cinematic experience reminiscent of film montages or poignant breakup scenes. Her storytelling, rooted in folk tradition, touches on universal feelings of love and loss. The songs were written during a period when Palombo and her partner were experiencing changes in their relationship, sometimes for the worse.
Themes explored in the EP focus on the evolution of love, the unsettling awareness of hidden doubts, and grief. Palombo dealt with these internal conflicts, unable to express them in words until she found a way to convey them through music. The EP’s alternative world includes organic sounds like bird song, creaking trees, and piano pedal movements. Layers of ethereal choirs and heavenly backing vocals transport listeners to another dimension. The music’s dynamics shift sharply, and the vocals soar, creating an enveloping atmosphere. These richly depicted landscapes portray two people searching for each other amidst the sunlight and shadows of their tumultuous relationship. The accompanying short film breathes life into the narrative with visual storytelling. David Graham, a talented director, enriches Palombo’s visual EP with depth and beauty, revealing the magic of complex aspects of love through each carefully crafted frame.

The EP opens with the track “A Letter (Overture),” giving the sensation of ascending a massive staircase leading to the gilded doors of a magnificent villa. This track lays the thematic foundation for the entire EP. Mixed instrumental elements intertwine like heather bushes, setting the tone for what is to come. They create an atmosphere of mystery, a prelude to something captivating. The second track, “Garden,” transports me into an atmosphere of youthfulness and romance. Marta’s tender, airy vocals resemble the song of paradise birds. The music in the track is carefully selected, creating harmony and idyll that complements Marta’s vocals. On one hand, there is shyness, sincerity, and naivety. But on the other hand, the song is not devoid of notes of sadness and melancholy. These contrasts make “Garden” particularly emotionally rich. The song becomes a musical thread between the past and the present, reminding us of the importance of cherishing every moment and experience. Sometimes, to escape from an overflow of emotions, one wants to find a secluded place unknown to anyone. “Prayer (Interlude)” felt like that refuge to me. Its slow pace and purity evoked feelings of tranquility, romance, and love. I felt the tenderness experienced in the embrace of a loved one, where words become unnecessary, and emotions are conveyed through barely perceptible glances and gestures.
My feelings upon listening to the album “Loveliness Made Damned” are light, airy, like a ghost. I found myself in a world of unfathomable emotions and subtle experiences, wandering amidst misty landscapes. The final track, “Ghost,” particularly stands out for its atmosphere, where elusive entities that cannot be seen can be heard. The music pulsates, with rhythmic beats, creating a sense of movement and tension. The interweaving of various instrumental elements adds depth and variety, making the song rich and multi-layered. Choral inserts and the main vocals intertwine in harmonious unity, and it felt like I was flying. The feeling of lightness and weightlessness carried by the music is so strong that I want to return to the track and experience those feelings again.
