Genre Fusion in the New EP “Cinematic Chromatics Vol. II” by Nick Marks

In one of the hidden alleys of a big city, amidst the bustling streets and the muted lights of neon signs, there’s a small jazz club that lives to its own rhythm. Known only to a select few, each night it becomes a haven for those seeking something new in music. Tonight’s rainy evening was no exception. The dense sounds of jazz filled the space like the aroma of fine wine, and the deep bass and rhythmic beats of percussion instruments sounded like the heartbeat of the city itself. Electronic notes dance with the melody, painting a picture of neon lights flickering on wet asphalt. This is the vibe of the new EP, Cinematic Chromatics Vol. II, by Nick Marks. Marks is a maestro, effortlessly blending jazz and classical piano styles into a seamless soundscape. He crafts musical narratives for both cinema and TV projects, collaborating and arranging for artists across various genres. And now, Nick Marks releases his chapter EP, Cinematic Chromatics Vol. II. The golden mean of his Cinematic Chromatics trilogy stands out amidst contemporary music with its innovative approach and boldness in integrating different genres. Marks demonstrates that musical boundaries can be pushed, creating something unique that both adheres to and reinterprets traditions. EP Cinematic Chromatics Vol. II weaves jazz, neo-soul, and electronica into a remarkable synthesis, creating Marks’ musical universe.

The main difference in the second part of “Cinematic Chromatics” compared to the first is the presence of a whole array of guest musicians, each adding their unique style and distinct character to every track. In Vol. I, the focus was on Nick Marks’ cinematic jazztronica aesthetic, creating a cohesive and monolithic sound that showcased him as a pianist and composer of expansive forms and ensembles. However, in the Vol. II, Marks crafts a truly multifaceted album without falling into the trap of repetition.

The first track, “Keep Goin’ Gotta Keep Up”, is a sparkling cocktail of summer, blending notes of jazz hip-hop with funky energy. It uplifts the mood and is the result of collaboration between Marks and rapper/drummer Doron Lev. They skillfully blend hip-hop elements with jazz texture, creating a unique sonic image filled with sunny energy. Synthesizers inspired by G-funk give the track a distinctive memorable sound, enveloping it in the atmosphere of a summer party. Elegant brass sections expertly complement this picture, creating an incredibly rich sound. Doron Lev’s vocals seamlessly fit into the music, adding extra charm.

The positivity of this first track smoothly transitions into the playful sounds of “Touché Hombre”. It continues the theme of the Marks’ sound, this time incorporating synthesizer murmurs and percussion rustles. The powerful waves of brass instruments are like the cherry on top, decorating the track and creating a sense of fullness and depth. “Touché Hombre” leaves no room for gloom, leaving you wanting more.

And this feeling intensifies from the first notes of “Back To Life”, where Doron Lev once again takes the stage. It imbues determination, explores the positive aspects of complex situations, and inspires the use of intuition, even when the goal is unclear. “Back To Life” starts with gentle electric piano chords, transitioning into playful synthesizer melodies and an energetic rhythm. The voices of the performers smoothly blend through bright brass chords, forming harmony intertwined with sharp rap passages from Doron Lev. The energy of the track changes like a switch, from gentle chords to dizzying rhythm, free vocal style, and smooth brass phrases. In less than three minutes, these two talented artists will take you on an exhilarating race, full of unexpected turns, leaving a taste of intrigue from start to finish. It’s the perfect blend of the rapper’s smooth vocals, Nick Marks’ stunning musicality, and the captivating creativity born from their musical chemistry. The final track, “Between Gigs,” skillfully creates an atmosphere of a cozy jazz club filled with the magic of music. The sweet sound of the trumpet smoothly transitions into the bell-like cascade of the electric piano, leaving an elusive trail of mystery.

Imagine a musical fusion where the echoes of bygone eras harmonize with the pulse of today, birthing a vibrant, utterly contemporary jazz melody. It’s a melting pot of styles intertwining, crafting a sound that feels timeless. This, my friends, is the essence of jazz in 2024. ‘Cinematic Chromatics Vol. II’ leaves behind memories of an incredible experience offered by Nick Marks.
