“PULP” by Michael Joseph Green: Synthesizers, Guitars, and Rebellious Spirit – All in One Bottle

Once, upon opening an old chest in the attic, I stumbled upon partially forgotten relics. Among yellowed photographs, dusty vinyl records, and worn-out letters, I found a music box tucked away in the corner. Its soft melodies permeated through the years. In this magical space, temporal boundaries blurred, and old melodies regained life, sounding fresh and relevant once again. That’s the feeling of time I experienced when I listened to the album “PULP” by Michael Joseph Green.

“PULP” is a bold step by Michael Joseph Green, where he merges the retro sounds of the 80s with contemporary notes, creating an eclectic pop-rock fusion. Bright synthesizers, juicy guitars, a stirring vocal infused with nostalgia and rebellious spirit—these are the three pillars upon which “PULP” stands. This album, absorbing the essence of different eras, became a true discovery for me, and I hope it will be the same for all music connoisseurs who appreciate the beauty in the continuous dialogue between the past and the present. In the 12-track album, Michael Joseph Green delivers a flood of memories intertwined with bursts of new inspiration. “Agent Orange” – the track that marked the beginning of my acquaintance with the album “PULP”. The song skillfully balances between the vocal part at the beginning and the subsequent powerful instrumental introduction. The bassline provides a foundation for the dynamic drum entry, adding drive to the track. The high-pitched vocals contrast with the powerful, “heavy” sound of the instruments and the sublime orchestra, emphasizing the dark depth of the track. The rhythmic introduction of “FEVER DREAM” changes the album’s sound and instantly grabs my attention.

Unpredictable changes in tempo and rhythm are what keep my interest alive. Michael’s signature traits, such as complex rhythms and catchy melodies, provide the perfect backdrop for his vocal delivery, which is marked by a unique fervor. The use of melodic repetitions to create an “stuck song syndrome” effect and contrasting melodies in different verses and choruses give the song a dynamic quality. However, when it comes to “Laugh Hotel,” it’s a whole different level. In this song, I found a true wealth of sounds, stadium-sized grandeur, and a plethora of melodies that won’t easily be forgotten. It’s a very stylish recording, but at the same time, existential. In my view, this song resonates with deep motifs and pays homage to sweet ghosts of the past. You can hear powerful guitar riffs, melodic keyboard parts, rhythmic drums, and even elements of jazz in it. And if “Laugh Hotel” is a song about memories, then the eponymous track “Pulp” represents a 180-degree turn. In this song, Michael explores new horizons in pop, rock, and blues, drawing inspiration from the use of drum machines, synthesizers, and voluminous vocals. Its alluring dark side adds a special spark to the track. The track “Six Underground” left a particularly strong impression on me. Charismatic vocals, weeping guitars, and sensual drums—such a cocktail sent shivers down my spine.

Michael Joseph Green’s voice is a bouquet of emotions that he delivers with strength and sincerity. I think this song, will become my soundtrack, accompanying me through different life situations and helping me find the strength to move forward. Excited by “Six Underground,” I didn’t realize I was already on the final track, “THE PIER,” which transported me to a virtual stroll on the pier under a relaxed cruise rhythm, enjoying the sea breeze and carefree mood. The smooth rhythm of the music literally carries thoughts away to vacation, where there’s no room for hustle and bustle. The sound of brass instruments reminds me of lazy summer days when time stretches slowly and pleasantly. I fully support Michael Joseph Green’s choice of the final track, “THE PIER” – it’s the perfect conclusion to the album, a pleasant return to reality after the musical storm.

“PULP” successfully blends retro vibes with modernity. One of the album’s highlights is its diversity, starting from hard-hitting protest songs, transitioning to more melancholic tunes, and ending the album on a serene note reminiscent of summer vacations. Michael Joseph Green has brought together various musical genres—rock, pop, blues, jazz, and even electronica—to create a unique sound that’s hard to categorize into any specific genre. Going on a cruise? In that case, add Michael Joseph Green’s album “PULP” to your playlist and enjoy the sound!
