But within this element, aside from danger, there lies a unique beauty and magic. Much like quicksand, feelings sometimes catch you off guard, drawing you into a whirlpool of emotions where you can encounter your most intimate thoughts. These are the very feelings I experienced when I listened to Ellanika’s new EP “Quicksand.”

Ellanika’s music overwhelmed me from the first seconds, like sand. Listening to this EP, I drifted through the quicksands of my feelings, sometimes finding myself in the depths of despair, then surfacing to hope. I learned more and more about myself, my fears, and my desires. In her music, Ellanika uses shifting soundscapes, a light atmosphere, and sweet melodies. At the very beginning of the EP, the song “Lumen” plays, with a light and bright motif that smoothly leads into a world ruled by solitary waves. The track sounds mesmerizing, reflecting the state when an imaginary world collides with reality and the glasses of illusions are shattered.
“Lumen,” with its romantic melody and touching vocals, led to reflections on hope for the better and a longing for light. With its stirring notes, I felt the fragility of life. “Lumen,” with its confessional lyrics, shares the most intimate thoughts. It doesn’t provide ready-made answers, it seems to guide you toward thoughts on the most important questions of existence. The gentle chords of “Lumen” smoothly transition into the track “Quicksand.”
Accompanied by a melancholic piano melody and barely audible sounds of an air guitar, Ellanika enchants with her romantic vocals and metaphorical lyrics. She shares her personal story, revealing her most intimate thoughts. Her performance explores the contrast between elevated beauty and nightmarish visions, with a soft voice perfect for lullabies and romantic ballads.
Ellanika finds ways to express personal experiences through music and highlight the importance of emotions. For example, the instrumental track “Nocturne” conveys a sense of accepting a storm of emotions and subsequent liberation from an oppressive state. Beginning with gentle chords, it gradually evolves into richer segments, using dynamic contrasts to heighten the dramatic tension. Ellanika’s masterful playing conveys emotions ranging from mild sadness to joyous delight. The piano music tells a story full of passion, sorrow, joy, and hope. With the final chords, I was left with a feeling of gentle melancholy. However, it is not sadness, but a feeling of open possibilities and tranquility after the experienced ordeal. The music seemed to be telling me: “Cherish every second, every experience, because within them lies the true magic of life.”

The final songs, the “bedroom versions,” convey a sense of carefreeness and freedom, where a sense of relief follows a heart-to-heart conversation. Also, through the bedroom versions of “Lumen” and “Quicksand,” the singer reveals her intimate demo sound, offering an introduction to the original sound of the tracks. It’s noteworthy that the vocal recording for “Lumen” took place across two different continents, in four cities (Frankfurt am Main, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal). This reflects Ellanika’s mastery, her complete dedication to music, and her deep love for her work. Listening to the “Quicksand,” this is evident, and therefore each track is perceived personally and intimately.
Each track of “Quicksand” reveals a new facet of the inner world, illustrating how feelings can oscillate between calm and dangerous storms, carrying the potential for renewal and the risk of losing oneself. It is reminiscent of a walk through dunes at sunset. Each song is a new dune, offering a unique view. But this does not frighten, it fascinates, as every minute in these musical whirlwinds brings new emotions. Merging with the melodies, I realized how important it is sometimes to just let go of control and allow yourself to go with the flow of life, even if it seems unpredictable and frightening. In this whirlwind of emotions, inspiration is born, and the soul finds its wings. I hope that after listening to the EP “Quicksand,” you too will discover something new for yourself. It is a world where harmony, beauty, and romance reign.
