Multiple Meanings: Why ‘Galáctico’ by Joe Tatton Trio Is the Jazz-Funk Album You Can’t Miss This Year

Every now and then, I stumble upon a jazz album. It’s like finding a new street in your own neighborhood—something familiar yet unexplored. Jazz, to me, is this vast landscape of raw emotions, crafted by people who can spin feelings into tunes like nobody’s business. Through exceptional artistry, these musicians reveal the subtleties of the musical experience and the limitless potential of their craft.

Recently, I got to know the Joe Tatton Trio. The trio includes Spanish guitarist Lucas De Mulder, British drummer Luke Flowers of Cinematic Orchestra, and Joe Tatton, best known as the keyboard player of the veteran UK jazz-funk quartet The New Mastersounds. Together, they have released the Joe Tatton Trio’s second album, “Galáctico,” consisting of 10 tracks.

The striking opening track “Double Take” appears to be quite dynamic. Starting with an energetic groove, the track continuously builds tension. The jazz guitar solo creates a foundation, and when the keyboards join in, the track gains even more powerful energy. From the bass play to the skillfully layered keyboard parts, the track is full of pulsating energy. “Double Take” impresses with its complex yet engaging structure. If the first track is the prelude to the album, then the second track stands out among the ten tracks for its individuality. The track “Hey!” is the only English-language vocal track on the album. The use of The Meters’ style, the vocal exclamation “Hey!” and the absence of other words create a multifaceted interpretation, allowing everyone to attach their own meaning. The keyboards, guitar, and drums play a crucial role, creating a striking foundation and giving the track the necessary drive.

Next comes ‘El Gato,’ featuring Sam Bell on congas and Atholl Ransome and Malcolm Strachan from The Haggis Horns, performed in a Latin style with a four-beat rhythm and improvisational solos. This track immediately caught my attention with its rich sound and the variety of instruments used. The forefront features lively and dynamic guitar riffs, with the drums adding rhythm. The keyboards bring harmony to the composition and support the musical texture. Meanwhile, the brass section adds color to the track with their bright melodies. The instruments improvise and switch solos throughout the track, giving the music a sense of mystery. I kept trying to guess what would come next.

The album “Galáctico” stands out for its cinematic quality, presenting a collection of tracks, each of which could become a soundtrack for a movie or TV series. The title track “Galáctico” evoked associations with iconic scenes from the film “Ocean’s Eleven,” where sophisticated heists happen to equally sophisticated and stylish music. The guitar and keyboards in “Galáctico” create an atmosphere of elegance, leaving an impression of glamour. The main powerful funky rhythm gives the melody an energetic and captivating sound. The brass instruments play a special role in the track, with their solos enhancing the brightness of the melody.

The album impresses with its expression; each track is a small musical essay. One piece radiates joy, another is filled with wild energy, and a third envelops you in tranquility. The penultimate track, “Moonbow,” unlike the others, sounds calmer and softer. The track is designed for a cozy evening in a small jazz club. Gentle jazz riffs create a feeling of lightness and comfort. The final chords of “Moonbow” gently dissolve into the air, creating a contemplative atmosphere. In this reflective state, I began listening to the final track, “Lost on You,” a composition with bright synthesizers, bass, and drums.

“Lost on You” is a return to disco and soul but with a modern twist. The piece has vibrant rhythms that remind you of the best moments of these genres. The album “Galáctico” by the Joe Tatton Trio is a brilliant jazz-funk record, combining elements of vintage sound with innovative musical solutions. Each of the ten tracks on the album showcases the highest level of musicianship and their ability to create resonant, multi-layered compositions. Joe Tatton, Lucas De Mulder, and Luke Flowers have created a work that will surely appeal to fans of jazz-funk and anyone who appreciates quality instrumental music.

The trio is currently on tour supporting the release of their album, so be sure to follow the musicians on social media. They might be in your city soon!
