Need a Reason to Groove? Johnny Burgos’ ‘All I Ever Wonder’ Is Here to Seduce Your Eardrums

Johnny Burgos is a singer, songwriter, producer, and sound engineer from Brooklyn. His retro-soul style conveys an uncompromising sound that reveals the beauty of pain, hope in despair, and the drive to struggle. Since childhood, Johnny has been fascinated by the rhythmic beats of salsa and soul music, influenced by his uncle, the renowned percussionist Andre Martinez. This fascination gradually grew into a passion for hip-hop production, especially working with the Akai MPC. Inspired by artists such as Michael Jackson, OutKast, J Dilla, Lauryn Hill, and D’Angelo, his music combines the foundations of R&B with elements of hip-hop, funk, pop, salsa, and reggae. Johnny has collaborated with artists like DJ Skizz, Mobb Deep, MOP, Marco Polo, Frans Mernick, and Liza Colby from The Gold Setting, and has toured the country with his band Bridge City Hustle.

This summer, Johnny Burgos, in tandem with veteran soul producer Jeremy Page (Kendra Morris / Czarface / MF Doom), released his first joint album “All I Ever Wonder.” In this album, Johnny Burgos steps into a fresh groove, revealing aspects of his musical persona we haven’t seen before. He is unafraid to be vulnerable, sharing his deepest experiences through heartfelt vocals and honest lyrics. The music of “All I Ever Wonder” is retro-soul, but it far from limits the album. It includes a variety of genres, such as jazz, funk, rap, and disco, which undoubtedly enhances its versatility and sparks interest.

The 11-track album opens with the “Plays for Keeps,” a touching story of agonizing passion between partners. Johnny’s sultry vocals capture the magic of the encounter and paint every detail of the moment. Jeremy Page’s handiwork on the instrumentals is a feast for anyone with a taste for early ’70s funk. It’s like a nod, a homage to the legends of that era—those giants whose tunes used to fill the air with raw, gritty magic. Page brings that spirit back, crafting beats that resonate with the soul of those golden days. Rich bass, rhythmic drums, and lush orchestration perfectly complement the vocals, creating an incredible musical blend. It must be said that Johnny has a very sensual singing style. Perhaps that’s why the track “Promise” seemed very seductive to me. The lyrics are easily a five-star effort. A sexually romantic and lyrical track, it’s perfect for reminiscing about beautiful days. But that’s my subjective opinion. Sensual brass and string instruments enhance the emotional guitar solos and vocals. Johnny gives it his all – you can feel the effort. Listening to the album, I found it difficult to pick a track that resonated with me the most. But with the first chords of the title track “All I Ever Wonder,” I knew this song was my favorite. One of the best tracks on the album, in my opinion. Johnny Burgos sings wonderfully, with an incredible harmony between all the instrumental parts and the performance. I could listen to it endlessly, but I must move forward.

After the blues ballad “All I Ever Wonder,” my attention was drawn to the track with a more energetic rhythm, “Something’s Gotta Give.” Play this composition in the morning before leaving the house, and you’ll have a great mood for the whole day. I really like the arrangement of “Something’s Gotta Give” – it immediately makes you want to do something and smile from ear to ear. Fast and sharp guitar riffs, intense drum parts – all of this creates a captivating rhythm. The lively brass and Burgos’ impeccable vocals make this track an explosive cocktail. The explosive wave of “All I Ever Wonder” carried me to the track “Trust Issues” – groovy is the most accurate description of it. From the first chords, I was inspired by the atmosphere and soon started nodding along to the beat. Another highlight of the album is that Johnny Burgos always raps his own lyrics, showcasing his incredible versatility. Listening to ‘All I Ever Wonder,’ it becomes increasingly clear just how open he is with his listeners, sharing his genuine self in every track.

Therefore, I wasn’t surprised that he chose “Old Man” with Liza Colby as the final song of the album – a cover of Neil Young’s classic hit. This touching and thoughtful version explores complex relationships with a father and the cycle of generational trauma that one wishes to break. The track drips with nostalgia, all because of Burgos and Colby laying down some seriously stunning vocals. Their voices cut right through, stirring up real emotions and touching something deep inside.
