Lagos, a bustling megacity of Nigeria filled with vibrant energy and cultural diversity, has become the cradle of the creative journey of the singer Obani. Growing up amidst its rhythms and dynamics, she absorbed afrobeats and the spirit of artistry from childhood, which later defined her musical style. Now, living in the United Kingdom, Obani is successfully building her music career by connecting her African roots with a modern sound. The latest release from Obani, “Lagos Lover Girl,” came out on October 18, 2024, in which she carefully weaves together the threads of her past with the bright colors of the present. Obani finds a clear balance between touching ballads, juicy, vibrant rhythms, and modern sound. “For You” is the track with which Obani begins her musical narrative. The combination of afro melodies and soft modern rhythms paints a vivid picture of a sunny morning, creating a calm atmosphere in which lightness and carefree feelings are felt. Her velvety voice easily handles transitions from melodic lines to more intense moments, its intonations conveying a full range of emotions.

One of the main songs on the EP, “Nobody,” is sincere and weightless. Obani calls it her “naked heart.” It tells the story of a strong girl from Lagos who, despite her independence, is not afraid to open up to the vicissitudes of love while remaining steadfast. The melodies, with pulsating beats and ethnic drums, sound more dynamic and infectious. Obani’s music is an impressive blend of traditional afrobeats rhythms and modern global influences, reflecting her desire for creative experimentation and collaboration with other artists.

One of the collaborations is her duet with Eri Ife in the song “Forever,” and I must admit that the guys did a fantastic job. Their performance has a palpable chemistry- voices intertwine in a harmony of unity. The melody captivates with its soft, harmonious transitions, while the rhythm smoothly and unobtrusively shifts tempo, keeping attention throughout the track. The song opens with gentle guitar chords that gradually transition into richer arrangements with bright percussive elements. The voices of Obani and Eri Ife intertwine in a romantic dance, each conveying their energy.

The track “Forever” particularly stands out with its romantic mood. In it, Obani raises an important theme: in love, as in music, everyone finds their truth, their emotions, and experiences. The performance is filled with warmth, just like all the songs on “Lagos Lover Girl.” The theme of the EP reflects different facets of feelings – tenderness, passion – showing how unique each experience of love is. This reflection is especially vividly traced in the touching track “Our Love.” The instrumental sections of the track create an atmosphere of intimacy: soft guitars and a light percussion rhythm enhance Obani’s vanilla-chocolate vocals. Smooth transitions between verses and choruses create a swing effect, where you first soar up and then fly down. This effect emphasizes the meaning of relationships between partners, their romance, and their complexity.

To conclude, Obani presents a poignant and emotionally rich track “Colours,” recorded in collaboration with Savy Henry. The song opens with the sad notes of a cello and the soft sound of keyboards, creating an atmosphere of sensitivity. Gradually, Obani’s and Henry’s voices join the instrumental accompaniment, filling the track with harmony and passion. “Colours” has become one of my favorites on the EP due to its sincere message and melody. The song is incredibly beautiful and could serve as the perfect musical backdrop for romantic moments. There is a special magic about it that makes it unforgettable.
