Echoes of Night Dreams in the New Album “In Between Dreams” by Secret Rendezvous

When former dreams are in question and the future feels uncertain, returning to creativity becomes the surest way to feel grounded again. This is the emotional lens through which the duo Secret Rendezvous passed. After a period of serious setbacks, doubts, and changes, the pair rediscovered joy in making music while working on the album “In Between Dreams”. The title refers both to fragments of nighttime visions that found their echo in the songs on the release, and to the feeling of being suspended between two life dreams: choosing between a music career and starting a family.

At the core of “In Between Dreams” lies a masterful blend of three elements: soulful vocals, serving as the emotional backbone of the album; warm synthesizers, enveloping the listener in a vintage atmosphere; and playful, precision-crafted rhythms that keep things lively. The album was entirely self-produced by Secret Rendezvous, with contributions from their regular musicians on several tracks. Mastering was handled by Jeffrey de Gans. The opening track, “In Between Dreams”, sets the tone impressively for what follows. Slow, singing – almost cantilena-like – melodies showcase the full beauty of vocals that effortlessly reach highest registers and convey deep emotion. This is just the beginning of the acquaintance with the duo, with a little over thirty minutes of sensual music ahead.

After the peaceful intro, “Feels So Good (Don’t It)” adds percussion, hypnotic synths, and even brass to the mix. Here, everything pulses – the rhythm, the mood; it’s impossible to sit still when the music drives forward with such confident pace. As a breather, Secret Rendezvous offer the laid-back summer soul cut “Mutual”, where hidden passion is felt in every detail – from the ethereal vocals to airy instrumental passages with smooth, barely perceptible transitions. This is the rare case where you want to dissolve into the music and let it lead you, without rushing.

In a similar mood comes “Two Faced Lover” – a track where velvety vocals glide gently over a dense bass and pulsing percussion. Through layers of flowing synths emerges a striking clarity and fragility in the multi-layered instrumentals, without any unnecessary emptiness. The result is a perfect balance of warmth and transparency, tender rhythm and airy melody. Now to four other tracks, each one better than the last. “Crush” sets its mood within seconds: juicy, assured rhythm that immediately pulls you into its current. A rhythmic yet fluid base, soft synth vibrations, and vocals that sound fresh, with just a spark of daring – it feels like Secret Rendezvous have found the ideal formula for lightness: nothing extra, just energy and vibe.

Brace yourself, because “Say The Word” is pure temptation wrapped in perfect musical packaging. The moment it starts, a wave sweeps over you: bossa-nova-funk in its most luxurious form. The rhythm beckons and sways from the very first beat – so rich and effortlessly groovy that your feet seek the dance floor (or at least the kitchen). It’s that exact slow burn track you want to sip a cocktail to, moving lazily along. A true ode to style, warmth, and playfulness. “Scandalous” aims to be the album’s loudest party anthem. It’s sharp, alive, armed with one of the catchiest choruses. What gives it extra charm? A subtle, secret weave of disco rhythms – seductive and elegant – lending the song a special, irresistible chic. A 100% hit for moving.

Finally, “Cold Shoulder”. Its languid synths and sensual vocals draw you into a whirlwind of melody. With this track, the journey feels never-ending: the hot-air balloon drifts away and continues its path, while we’re gently led out of a meditative state and invited to resume life with clear thoughts. Special mention goes to the striking “Sober”, with its irresistibly warm vocal delivery and virtuoso instrumental work – impossible to tear yourself away from. The melody sweeps you up, and when the vocals step forward, they feel so tender and heartfelt that you realize: this is the quintessence of the duo’s newly found sound. The closing track, “Onto Something,” is an intimate ballad that begins with delicate guitar picking before unfolding into an epic, richly textured soundscape. The perfect, inspiring final chord – one that makes you want to replay the album from the top.

As a big fan of soul music, I am certain many of our readers share the same passion. For them, “In Between Dreams” may turn out to be a gift – an exquisite, high-level example of “blue-eyed soul.” Secret Rendezvous are a textbook embodiment of the style. They’ve delivered a project impossible to overlook – and, once noticed, impossible not to admire. We can only hope for more to come; it’s hard not to believe that Secret Rendezvous still have plenty to say beyond these ten songs.
