We use certain phrases so often that we rarely give them special meaning, but in fact they can mean almost everything at once. “Not here” is one of those. It could be a rejection: “I’m not here for you.” It could be a diagnosis: “I’m physically present, but my thoughts are somewhere else.” Or it could be a tender admission: a person has gone so deep into themselves that no “hello” can reach them anymore. It’s from this gap between presence and absence that Leaf House’s new single grows – a non-binary indie artist from Chattanooga who consistently blurs the lines between indie pop, art rock, and experimental electronics.

“Not Here” deliberately doesn’t force events. The arrangement is built on the laws of bedroom pop – chamber, “room” sound, where details come to the forefront. Soft keys and carefully picked guitar create air around the melody – a space in which the song’s entire emotional drama unfolds. Ambient noises, light samples, enveloping synth pads – all of this works as atmospheric glue. Textures hold the attention: the track “settles” – like light from a window in an empty room, which you don’t notice right away, but then can’t stop looking at. The rhythm section is markedly delicate: a soft beat, restrained percussion, muted bass – all so as not to spook the hypnotic, slightly slowed pulse of the song.
The true center of gravity of “Not Here” is, of course, the vocals. Leaf House sings as if standing a couple of centimeters from the listener’s ear: a subtone technique, a whisper in which breath becomes a full-fledged instrument. Intimate, I’d say confidential, the vocal is wrapped in spatial reverb and soft delay. The layering of the vocals deserves special attention: at the climactic moments, the main phrase is picked up by quiet backing harmonies, and an effect of inner dialogue arises – as if several voices are sounding inside at once, checking whether anything at all will answer back. A very precise device for a track built entirely around the theme of loneliness: even the vocal multi-layering here sounds like an echo in an empty room.

“Not Here” is a state carefully packed into four minutes of neo-psychedelic, lo-fi indie pop. After listening, a feeling of sadness and calm remains. Leaf House has managed to record the perfect soundtrack for the moments when the only thing you want is to be “not here.”
