Abby Nissenbaum – a critically acclaimed Nashville-based indie rock artist and member of the LGBTQ+ scene – has released her new single “Growth Story.” Her songs offer an honest exploration of depression, loneliness, and heartbreak, without sinking into darkness: there is always space for hope, support, and a sense of community. Her simple, sincere vocals and emotional lyrics pair with energetic indie rock instrumentation, creating a vivid contrast.
“Growth Story” also marks her first step toward contemporary country, a direction she has been moving toward after five years in Nashville. The song is about a difficult role in relationships: when you help someone else figure out who they are, only to end up being the one left behind.
