May Payne Finds Courage in the First Rush of Love on “Solid Ground”

London-based singer-songwriter May Payne brings folk intimacy and an appetite for emotional intensity to “Solid Ground”, a song about the thrilling, exhausting business of trusting somebody. Following her EPs “Sane” and “High Demand”, the single previews “Keeper”, due on 13 November. Its subject is the beginning of an important relationship, when affection arrives quickly and every admission carries consequences.

The gentle opening and tender vocal establish the song’s warmth before the chorus opens into a broader, singable melody. That expansion suits the writing. Affection, fear and self-accusation occupy the same space, with Payne weighing the security somebody offers against her own capacity to hurt them. Read through that tension, “Solid Ground” becomes a love song with something substantial at stake.
