Jazz, Pop, and one Perfect Hit: Hana Effron and Toby Gad as a Duo

A woman can make a millionaire out of any billionaire,” Salvador Dalí once remarked ironically. In the music industry, the formula of the great surrealist works a little differently: a brilliant producer can elevate a talent to the status of an icon, but only if the talent has enough courage to fully open up before the microphone. In the case of the new single “MY LOVE FOR YOU WILL STAY” by Hana Effron, we are witnessing a rare creative union and a refined act of musical seduction, where Toby Gad’s experience meets her sincerity.

The daughter of two cultures, Southern California and Japan, she delicately combines Pacific contemplation with a Western ability to transform melancholy into a vivid narrative. The status of a multi-instrumentalist was already hers before, but it is precisely in tandem with Toby Gad, a songwriter and producer, that her talent crystallized: here youthful searching has transitioned into a mature form. What is the result? A jazz-pop ballad – an accurate but incomplete definition. It is like an old black-and-white film, carefully colorized without disturbing the grain of the film. Hana begins with a slightly husky, dark intimacy – comparisons to Norah Jones are appropriate here, but only as a starting point.

Then comes a light dizziness: the choruses lift into transparent pop, maintaining the same intimate intonation. Her timbre resembles expensive vintage velvet, bearing traces of lived dramas. The piano envelops everything in warmth, which in itself is an argument in favor of the idea that some feelings are best conveyed through keys. The verses sound like a whisper in a half-empty bar somewhere in Kyoto, while the choruses are a pure, smooth flight. This is where a certain “fairy-tale quality” appears, for which co-writers Emily Bear and Angel Taylor were responsible, transforming the ballad into a soundtrack to a film you will definitely want to revisit.

And speaking figuratively, “MY LOVE FOR YOU WILL STAY” is like drinking icy gin on a sultry summer evening: it both burns and brings long-awaited relief. Hana Effron is a multi-instrumentalist who feels the keys as if they are an extension of her fingers.

“MY LOVE FOR YOU WILL STAY” is the fifth single from Gad’s upcoming album, and it sets a level that many contemporary pop divas will find difficult to surpass without the help of stunt doubles. A song about a love that remains when smartphone screens go dark and the noise of parties fades away.
