Songs rarely appear right away. Some are written in an evening, others require time, pauses, and returns, until they finally coincide with what a person truly feels. With “Someone’s Got To”, CATLEA had it happen exactly like that. Perhaps that is why it sounds very sincere. “When I originally wrote the song,” CATLEA confessed, “it wasn’t written with the intention of getting better, it was more of a hopeful thing; an acknowledgment that I needed to love myself more and take better care of myself, because I wasn’t doing that at the time.”
The song has a complicated, painful story. Recording in Barcelona was interrupted due to an emotional breakdown. It took CATLEA months, complete sobriety, saying goodbye to a toxic environment, and working on herself to return to Room To Studio and finish the track. “Cosmically, it felt like “Someone’s Got To” wasn’t allowed to exist until it was true” – they say. Musically, this is a delicate indie-pop story: a live, breathing acoustic guitar, softly unfolding strings, and vocals in which one can hear the vulnerability of a person who, for the first time in a long time, has looked at themselves without judgment. Finding herself at a crossroads between the destructive habits of the past and the desire to finally surface, the artist comes to an important thought: not to wait for salvation from the outside. At the center of the song is a refrain-vow: “If you won’t love me then I will. I’ll be so much better than I was before… ’Cause someone’s got to”. In these lines, there is both a plea and a firm choice. If the world does not give you warmth, you have to learn to give it to yourself.
Producer Jason Boshoff and guitarist Oscar Garcia-Bragado helped gather this drama piece by piece. The song was born between Barcelona, London, Cincinnati, and Israel and was gradually built as a movement from realizing an old trap in the first verse – to a decision, then to accepting oneself as an imperfect but living person, and in the final to affirming one’s own worth. “Someone’s Got To” is a song where a personal story stops being pain and becomes a foundation.
