For the members of The Active Set, death in recent years has ceased to be an abstraction and has become a routine backdrop of existence: the passing of parents, friends, and colleagues occurs with such frequency that it is now perceived as a distorted norm, bordering on the absurd.
The band directly captures this state in their new single “Death Of A Friend,” which is noticeably harsher and more straightforward compared to their recent work. Guitars and a dense melodic bass line take center stage, while the lyrics are stripped of euphemisms and indirect phrasing: “I don’t want to talk about my feelings, I just need everyone to stop dying,” sings frontman Matthew Stolarz, articulating not emotional reflection but an extreme exhaustion born of repeated loss.
