Australian singer-songwriter Carys Kinnell has moved from sunny Perth to Hull in the UK, but her thoughts often drift back home. In her debut single, “Southern Stars,” she fondly recalls sun-drenched beaches, summer evenings and carefree days. The result is an infectious indie-pop track that brings a little taste of summer.
Carys wrote the song on a cold December evening, longing for her hometown. It brings to life late-night drives, ocean sunsets, trips to Rottnest Island, gigs that run into the early hours and long nights spent gazing at the stars of the Southern Hemisphere. Even the phrase land down under, a familiar nickname for Australia, is split across two lines – a small detail that makes the song feel all the more personal.
